The Netherlands has relocated 86 tonnes of gold previously held in the United States and Canada to London amid rising geopolitical and economic uncertainty. The move is being described as part of the Dutch central bank’s preparations for a potential severe crisis, although officials and analysts say it does not necessarily indicate that a major economic collapse is imminent. Other European countries, including France and Germany, have also brought portions of their overseas gold reserves closer to home in recent years. London remains a major global gold-trading hub, allowing central banks to access and trade the metal quickly when necessary. The trend comes as central banks worldwide continue to increase their gold holdings, viewing the precious metal as a strategic reserve and a safe-haven asset during periods of inflation, financial instability and geopolitical tension.
